The 12 Best Massage Oils

The 12 Best Massage Oils

A good massage oil can turn a simple back rub into a truly relaxing experience. It’s not just about reducing friction; the right oil can nourish your skin, soothe sore muscles, and even calm your mind with amazing scents.

But finding the perfect one can be tough. Some are greasy, some absorb way too fast, and others have scents that are just… off. I’ve tried a ton of them, from budget-friendly bottles to super-luxe splurges, to find the massage oils that actually deliver.

These are the ones that made the cut, whether you need something for sensitive skin, a romantic night in, or some serious muscle relief.

Our Top Massage Oils

Cliganic Certified Organic Jojoba Oil

Cliganic Certified Organic Jojoba Oil

This oil costs around $29. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, this is your new best friend. I’m always hesitant to put oils on my face or back, but this one is different.

It’s so lightweight and absorbs beautifully. Because jojoba oil is so similar to our skin’s natural sebum, it feels incredibly moisturizing without any greasy residue. It’s a lifesaver for my eczema-prone spots, too.

The Downside: It does have a faint, nutty smell. I don’t mind it, but if you’re looking for something completely odorless, this isn’t it.

Majestic Pure Fractionated Coconut Oil

For just $14, you get a huge bottle of this stuff. I use it for quick, daily self-massages on my shoulders after staring at a computer all day. It’s awesome because it always stays liquid, unlike regular coconut oil.

It absorbs easily and has a nice, smooth feel that isn’t sticky. And it’s a fantastic carrier oil. I love adding a few drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil to it for a little aromatherapy boost.

The Downside: The bottle is pretty big. If you only use massage oil once in a blue moon, this might be too much for you.

NOW Solutions Sweet Almond Oil

This one is about $12. When you need an oil for a long, full-body massage, this is the one to grab. It has the perfect amount of “slip” and doesn’t sink in too quickly.

You get a really nice, long-lasting glide without having to reapply every few minutes. My skin always feels incredibly soft and nourished afterward, and it doesn’t clog my pores.

The Downside: It’s made from almonds, so it’s a definite no-go for anyone with a nut allergy.

Kate McLeod The Sex Stone

Kate McLeod The Sex Stone

This unique stone is $48. It isn’t your typical massage oil, and that’s what makes it so special. It’s a solid, cocoa-butter-based stone that you warm in your hands until it melts into a luxurious oil.

The experience feels incredibly intimate and sensual. It glides over the skin beautifully, and the scent is a gorgeous blend of florals and spices. Plus, there’s no risk of spilling a bottle in bed.

The Downside: The scent is part of the experience, so if you or your partner prefer fragrance-free products, you’ll want to skip this one.

Chanel L’Huile Vanille Body Massage Oil

At $230, this is an absolute splurge. But if you want to treat yourself or someone else, this Chanel oil is pure luxury. The texture is divine, and it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth, not oily.

The real star is the scent. It’s a warm, enveloping vanilla that smells sophisticated and deeply relaxing. It makes a simple massage feel like a five-star spa treatment.

The Downside: The price is obviously very high. It’s a special occasion product, for sure.

Earthlite Pro-Lite Massage Oil

Earthlite Pro-Lite Massage Oil

This is a fantastic professional-grade oil for only $13. It was clearly made with therapists in mind. It has an excellent, long-lasting glide and a light texture that feels great on the skin.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s water-dispersible, which means it washes out of sheets and towels so easily. No more stubborn oil stains! It’s also hypoallergenic and a great base for adding your own essential oils.

The Downside: It’s completely unscented, which is great for sensitive clients but lacks that sensory, spa-like feel right out of the bottle.

Weleda Lavender Relaxing Body Oil

Weleda Lavender Relaxing Body Oil

Priced at $20, this is my go-to for winding down at night. A quick massage with this on my shoulders and neck is the perfect end to a stressful day. It absorbs quickly, so I don’t feel greasy getting into bed.

The lavender scent is authentic and calming, not artificial or overpowering at all. It genuinely helps soothe my senses and signals to my brain that it’s time to rest.

The Downside: The bottle is on the smaller side, so if you use it for full-body massages, you’ll go through it pretty quickly.

Elemis De-Stress Massage Oil

For $45, this oil is a powerhouse for tension relief. When I have knots in my back or my muscles just feel achy and tired, this is what I reach for. It has a beautiful blend of lavender, chamomile, and geranium.

The combination of the warming massage and the aromatic oils feels like it just melts stress away. It works on both a physical and mental level to help you relax.

The Downside: The herbal scent is quite potent. I love it, but it might be too strong for people sensitive to smells.

Dame Intimate Massage Oil

Dame Intimate Massage Oil

This one costs $24. It’s designed to be used everywhere, and they mean everywhere. It’s wonderfully smooth and non-sticky, making it perfect for both intimate moments and a regular back massage.

I really appreciate that it’s pH-safe and made with natural ingredients like jojoba and hemp seed oil. It provides a sensual, relaxing feel without causing any irritation or issues.

The Downside: It’s a small bottle, and because it feels so good, it’s easy to use it up fast.

Aesop Rejuvenate Intensive Body Balm

This balm runs for $40. It’s technically a balm, but it melts into a rich oil on contact with the skin. It’s fantastic for targeted massages on the neck and shoulders.

It absorbs really well, leaving skin feeling super nourished but not greasy. And the scent is classic Aesop: a sophisticated, woody, and citrusy aroma that is just incredible.

The Downside: It comes in a tub, so you have to scoop it out. I do wish it had a pump for easier dispensing.

Picking the right massage oil really comes down to what you’re looking for. Do you need deep hydration, a calming scent to help you sleep, or something practical that won’t stain your sheets?

No matter your preference or budget, there’s an option out there that can make your massage experience so much better. A little bit of the right oil goes a long way toward melting the day’s stress away.
