Top Pixie Cut Styling Products

Top Pixie Cut Styling Products

Styling a pixie cut is a whole different world. I learned pretty quickly that it’s not just “wash and go.” Your entire look depends on finding the right product to give it texture, hold, or volume without weighing it all down.

Over the years, I’ve tried just about everything. Some products turned my hair into a greasy mess, while others felt like I was wearing a helmet. It’s a delicate balance.

So I put together a list of the stuff that actually works. Whether you need to tame a cowlick, build some root volume, or just get that perfectly messy look, something here will do the trick. Even the best short hair curling tools need a good foundation product to make the style last.

Best Pastes, Putties & Serums for Pixie Cuts

Kristin Ess Fragrance Free Texturizing Paste

This paste costs about $10, and it’s my go-to for everyday texture.

Because it’s water-based, it gives you that piecey, unpolished look without making your roots feel greasy. I just work a tiny bit through my dry hair to break things up. It’s perfect for that lived-in style that doesn’t look like you tried too hard.

The Downside: If you’re trying to build a faux hawk or need something to stay put all day, this probably isn’t it. The hold is pretty light.

Harry’s Texturizing Putty

For about $12, this putty is a beast for taming stubborn spots.

I have this annoying cowlick right at my hairline, and this is one of the few things that can control it without feeling crunchy or sticky. It offers a really strong, malleable hold that’s perfect for more structured pixie styles. Plus, it smells incredible.

The Downside: It’s pretty thick, so it takes a little practice to warm it up in your hands and apply it evenly without getting clumps.

Davines This is an Invisible Serum

This one is more expensive at around $23, but it’s pure magic for shine.

It’s not for hold, but for finish. When my hair looks a little dull or I have some springy flyaways, a tiny drop of this smooths everything out and gives it a healthy, glossy look. It feels like nothing is in your hair, which I love.

The Downside: The price is a little steep for the size, but a little really does go a long way.

Axe Messy Look Flexible Hair Paste

Don’t let the branding fool you; this $13 paste is a fantastic drugstore find.

I grabbed this on a whim and was shocked by how well it works. It gives my fine, flat hair a ton of texture and flexible hold for that perfect messy look. It’s not sticky and gives a nice matte finish.

The Downside: It has a very distinct, strong “Axe” scent. If you’re sensitive to fragrance, you might not like it.

Matrix Over Achiever 3-in-1

Matrix Over Achiever 3-in-1

This 3-in-1 product costs about $22 and does a little bit of everything.

It spreads like a cream, texturizes like a paste, and holds like a wax. It’s a great all-rounder if you don’t want a dozen products on your shelf. It gives good structure and smooths things down at the same time.

The Downside: Because it’s a multi-purpose product, it doesn’t excel at one specific thing. It’s not the best for extreme texture or the strongest for hold, but it’s a solid performer for daily styling.

Best Volumizing Powders for Short Hair

Redken Powder Grip

At around $20, this powder is all about root lift and serious grit.

When my hair feels flat, I just puff a tiny bit of this right at the roots and massage it in. The volume is instant and it lasts. It adds a ton of texture and grip for styling a faux hawk or just giving your hair some height that stays put.

The Downside: It’s easy to overdo it. If you apply too much, your hair can feel chalky and it can get a little messy during application.

Kevin Murphy Powder Puff

This one is a bit pricier at $25, but it gives a softer, more pliable volume.

While the Redken powder is about intense grip, this one is more for creating soft, touchable texture. It still provides great lift for fine hair, but the hold is more reworkable. I use this when I want volume that has some movement to it.

The Downside: It’s definitely more expensive than some other texturizing powders you can find at the drugstore.

Best Hairspray for Locking in Your Style

Kenra 25 Super Hold Hairspray

Kenra 25 Super Hold Hairspray

This hairspray is about $20 and it’s the gold standard for hold.

After I’ve styled my hair perfectly, this is what I use to lock it all in place. It provides incredible hold and keeps any volume I’ve built from falling flat by midday. Best of all, it doesn’t feel sticky or look stiff.

The Downside: The hold is no joke. Once it’s dry, you’re not brushing it out. It’s a commitment until your next wash.

At the end of the day, styling pixie hair is all about what works for your hair type and the look you want. Some days I want a soft, piecey look, and other days I need enough hold to survive a hurricane.

Don’t be afraid to try a few things. The right product can totally change how you feel about your short hair, making it fun to style instead of a chore.
