Remember that stiff, crunchy, helmet-hair look from the early 2000s? Yeah, me too. The good news is that hair gel has come a very, very long way since then. The formulas today are lighter, stronger, and way less likely to leave your head a flaky mess.
I spent the last few weeks putting dozens of them to the test. I tried gels for thick hair, fine hair, curly hair, and everything in between. My goal was simple: find the ones that provide actual hold without making my hair feel like plastic.
Some were incredible. Others went right into the trash. So here they are—the best hair gels I actually tried and loved.
Best All-Around Hair Gels
These are the workhorses. They’re perfect for most hair types and styles, giving you great hold without much fuss. If you don’t know where to start, start here.
American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel
This is probably the most recognizable hair gel on the planet, and for good reason. It just works. It gives a solid, all-day hold with a healthy-looking shine that never looks greasy.
I found it was super easy to apply and, more importantly, easy to wash out. It’s the perfect baseline gel—reliable, effective, and it won’t let you down.
Redken Brews Extreme Gel
If you want a slightly stronger hold than the American Crew without going full-on concrete, this is your stuff. It locks hair in place but still feels surprisingly lightweight.
What I really liked is that it doesn’t get flaky, even after a long day. It’s a fantastic daily driver for guys who need a little extra control.
Best for Super Strong Hold
For styles that need to defy gravity—spikes, mohawks, or a super slicked-back look—you need the heavy hitters. These gels are not messing around.
Got2b Ultra Glued Invincible Styling Hair Gel
Listen, when the tube says “glued,” they mean it. This is probably the strongest gel I’ve ever used. I styled my hair in the morning, and it looked exactly the same when I went to bed.
It’s not for the faint of heart. You will need to use shampoo to get this out, because water alone won’t do a thing. But for pure, unmovable hold, nothing beats it.
Johnny B. Mode Styling Gel
This one is an absolute beast for hold, but it feels a little less intense than Got2b. It’s a super thick gel, so you only need a tiny amount to get the job done.
It creates a powerful cast that locks everything in place. It’s great for thicker hair that tends to fight back against weaker products.
Oribe Rock Hard Gel
If you want a luxury experience with your extreme hold, this is it. First off, it smells incredible, like you just left a high-end salon. It creates a sleek, high-shine finish that looks very polished.
And yes, it is “rock hard.” It’s perfect for that sharp, wet look that needs to last all night. It’s pricey, but it definitely delivers.
Best for Fine or Thinning Hair
The challenge with fine hair is getting hold without weighing it down. You want volume and control, not flat, greasy-looking strands. These gels nail that balance.
Aveda Men Pure-Formance Firm Hold Gel
This gel felt almost weightless in my hair. It gives a firm, confident hold while also making hair feel a bit thicker, which is a huge plus.
It has a natural, subtle scent and doesn’t contain a bunch of harsh ingredients. It’s perfect for adding control without sacrificing volume.
Kenra Professional Styling Gel 17
I was really impressed with this one. It provides a serious hold (a 17 out of 25 on their scale) but doesn’t feel heavy at all. It gave my hair body and shine without any crunchiness.
Best of all, it’s completely flake-free. Flakes are extra noticeable on fine hair, so this was a big win.
Baxter of California Thickening Style Gel
This one is specifically built to add some bulk to your hair. I found it did a great job of adding texture and fullness, especially when I applied it to damp hair before blow-drying.
It has a more natural, low-shine finish, which is great if you don’t want to scream “I’m wearing hair gel!”
Best for Thick & Curly Hair
Curls and thick hair need two things: moisture and control. The right gel will define your curls and fight frizz without making them feel dry or crunchy.
Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross Strong Hold Gel
This stuff is fantastic for defining curls. It helps clump them together for that perfect, frizz-free look while providing a hold that actually lasts.
I applied it to soaking wet hair and scrunched. My curls were bouncy and defined all day, and they weren’t crunchy at all once they dried.
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard
A legend in the curly community for a reason. This custard-like gel gives amazing definition and shine while moisturizing your hair at the same time.
It’s great for eliminating frizz and giving you that perfect curl pattern. A little bit of this stuff goes a very, very long way, so the jar lasts forever.
R+Co Motorcycle Flexible Gel
I love this for thick hair because it’s a hybrid between a gel and a wax. It gives you the control and shine of a gel but the flexibility and texture of a wax.
You can run your hands through your hair during the day and it just falls back into place. It’s the best of both worlds.
DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel
This is the holy grail for so many curly-haired people. It creates a strong “curl cast” as your hair dries, which locks in your curl pattern and prevents frizz from forming.
Once your hair is 100% dry, you just gently scrunch your hair to break the cast. You’re left with incredibly soft, defined, and frizz-free curls.
Best Budget-Friendly Hair Gels
You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great hold. These drugstore finds perform way better than their price tags suggest.
L.A. Looks Extreme Sport Gel
Ah, the classic blue gel. You can get a massive tub of this for just a few bucks, and honestly, it works surprisingly well. The hold is strong and it won’t budge.
It’s a no-frills product that does exactly what it promises. For a simple, spiked-up look on a tight budget, you really can’t go wrong.
Garnier Fructis Style Pure Clean Styling Gel
This is my favorite drugstore pick. It feels much more modern than other budget options. It’s free of silicones and parabens, and it has a nice, clean scent.
The hold is a solid medium-strong, and I experienced zero flaking. It’s an awesome value for the quality you get.
Clubman Styling Gel
This is a barbershop staple. It’s a simple, straightforward gel that gives you a reliable medium hold and a bit of shine. It has that classic, clean barbershop scent.
There are no gimmicks here. It just works, plain and simple.
More Great Gels I Tested
A couple more that earned a spot on the list for being great at specific things.
Bumble and bumble Bb.Gel
If you hate the feeling of product in your hair but need to tame flyaways, this is for you. It’s incredibly lightweight and provides just a touch of control and polish.
It’s perfect for a clean, natural look where you want your hair to look like it’s not trying too hard.
Pacinos Styling Gel
This gel’s claim to fame is that it’s flake-free, and it absolutely lives up to it. It provides a firm hold with a medium shine that looks clean all day.
It’s also water-soluble, so it rinses out completely with just water. No leftover residue or buildup.
Ultimately, the best hair gel for you comes down to your hair and the style you want. The days of one-size-fits-all crunchy gel are long gone, and there are so many good options out there now.
My advice is to figure out if you need light, medium, or concrete-level hold and start from there. Don’t be afraid to try a couple, because the right product can completely change your styling routine.
